This piece was made for Design Victoria 2024, in conjunction with Craigdarroch Castle, during my time at Camosun College. It was exhibited in the Castle as part of an effort to bring contemporary furniture into an unlikely setting.
The castle's history as a lesson and recital space for the Victoria Conservatory of Music sparked the desire to create a musical instrument. This was paired with the inspiration from the parlor room and it's amalgamation of fun items; pool tables, speakers with large horns and eclectic furniture. The resulting piece is a Theremin, an early 1900s invention known for its magic-like creation of eerie sounds, made without actually making contact with the instrument. The Castle brings forward images of past voices and occult spirits. Here their voices are heard with the mystifying parlor-trick-esque device that is the Theremin.
