Listening to music can be a captivating, inviting and bonding experience and represents a key part of a daily routine for many people. Whether this is in a crowd of people at a concert, on-the-go with headphones or at home in a listening environment, the quality of sound being produced and interpreted by our brains should not be taken lightly. This can be the difference between a good, bad or ultimately ideal listening experience.
The Pink Noise speaker was designed during my time at Waterloo for my own application and listening experience. It was important that it cater to my needs in terms of listening preferences. As I tend to listen to a wide range of music, the design must handle the entire audible frequency spectrum and deliver a crisp sound which reflects the intentions of the artist. I also heavily listen to electronic, house and techno, which means the speaker must be able to produce low frequency waves and heavy bass without sounding muddy. As this was my first attempt at designing speakers, the cost needed to remain low and include room for changes and iterations in the design. This project represents a preliminary design and build of a speaker, and will act as a step into the world of speaker design.
